Evolution of a Web Design: Photoshop or HTML / CSS?

by jon on August 24, 2008

This week has landed me mostly in meetings with old clients and friends where I often find myself explaining the difference between web design and web development. I bring this up since I've had the opportunity to work with some really gifted graphic and web designers as of late that have further emphasized the differences for me.

Thanks to Skype, I was able to work on a design in Photoshop with a web designer who's currently in Israel.

We started our conversation with me in a panic as I was staring at a blank canvas, wondering how I was going to take the work of a graphic designer and put it into an extensible and Wordpress-friendly design. I started with a grid and tried to jog my memory from what little I learned in art school.

I would've normally picked a website template, modified the header and called it a day, however the graphic work was intricate, beautiful and unwilling to accommodate a run-of-the-mill website template (1-column, 2-column, 3-column, etc...)

Seeing as I'm not a web designer, I'm pretty happy with the results.

Hi Rachel,
The graphics were awesome! Will you be coming to SHIFT? It’s been a long time since we’ve connected in person.
