I met Shayne for the first time when I was trying to start an online magazine with some friends in Quebec's equivalent of college (CEGEP). At the time, Shayne was at the tipping point in his freelance career as a professional photographer. He was a huge help to me and my friends when we needed professional looking photographs for the shows we were covering and so I offered to build him a website in exchange.

Unfortunately, that never happened due to time and life. As I was learning not to look down and holding on for dear life after climbing too high, I remembered the promise I had made to Shayne. Fast forward a couple weeks and Shayne was kind enough to let me pay back an old debt over some soup and coffee.

His work speaks for itself and I don't think any design can really do it justice. If you have a moment, I suggest sitting back and enjoying shaynelaverdiere.com.

About a year ago, my friend (and former substitute teacher!) Mike Savatovsky told me about a wonderful organization that he was intent on starting. Mike is someone who's always been interested in providing people with education. I fondly remember sitting in class with Mike and remarking how apt a teacher he was.

When we started working on the Flyt Foundation together, I asked Mike what he felt made him such a successful teacher. He told me that what made him successful was his ability to tell stories. As someone who produces online education resources, I thought of how fragmented my own work is and how it suffers from this very issue.

All this is to say that the Flyt Foundation just recently launched a preliminary site on a humble budget with the lofty goal of providing young people with the ability to tell stories that will change our world into a better one.

If you're interested in learning more, don't be shy and check out the Flyt Foundation website, or send Mike Savatovsky an email.

I decided to put together a little portfolio of some my work. Unlike traditional portfolios, I've made the entire navigation tag-based. The portfolio is still a bit of a work in progress, so any feedback would be appreciated. This was a bit of an experiment with the Zend Framework's latest release, now that they've implemented a sane directory structure and a standardized way of bootstrapping the application.

enjoy!

There's been a recent lull in my posting for a number of reasons. I'm currently sitting in a bubble tea joint on Younge street (Toronto) enjoying some tapioca and catching up on a volume of musings from an old contact.

The Montreal Shift conference was a success and I've now inherited another blog to manage. I wrote a simple scheduling system using prototype and serialized JSON objects that facilitated the online registration.

As a result of some humble brainstorming with a fellow professional in Montreal, I'll be doing a series of web design workshops at the Atwater Digital Literacy Project. Aside from that, I'm working on another javascript / canvas-based utility which I'll release in a couple of days that attempts to build collaborative taxonomies.

This week, I decided to inflict my cooking attempt onto a friend of mine. We began by seasoning beef cubes with basil and garlic:

By making incisions in the raw beef and putting raw garlic and minced onions, the beef was rich in natural flavour.

I added the beef into a mushroom and spinach stir fry. Unfortunately the beef was overcooked (still edible) and the rice was too watery (I got distracted...):

meal 2 consisted of using merguez saussages (which already have plenty of flavor) and frying them up with a bit of dijon mustard before putting them into a tomato sauce with mushrooms, carrots and tomatoes. Adding the spinach and parmesan at the end really added to the presentation and texture:
